The authors selection from a lifetime of annotations and marginal comments noted in his reading matter. Under headings such as Philosophic Doubt A Choice of Creeds, and The Companionship of Sound, he has linked together, with commentary of his own, quotations from sources of all kinds.

Although first published in 1959, this edition was produced in 1961 for the members of the Readers Union in London and that makes it somewhat unique. There is some water staining to the dust cover and perhaps some discolouration but the pages are clean and unmarked. It is a highly collectible book.
