Margaret Holmes

Michelle Cavanagh

Margaret Holmes was a tireless campaigner of the peace movement, particularly in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s in Australia. A lively, spirited and strong-willed woman, Margaret Holmes married a doctor and produced six children, while all the time continuing to participate in peace activism.

She opened a branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) in her Sydney home in 1960 and campaigned against the use of atomic weapons. The era of the Vietnam War was her most challenging period, where Margaret’s anti-Vietnam activities were shadowed by ASIO.

Speaking out against Australia¹s involvement in the Vietnam War, apartheid in South Africa and chemical and biological weapons, Margaret was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2001.

This book is a celebration of what one woman can achieve in her lifetime. (signed)
